Kerala Government has begun its AADHAAR Enrollment project, UID registration for Kochi population to get their 12 digit Aadhaar Number. The Aadhaar Cards project is kicked off in the city. Kerala Excise Minister K Babu inaugurated the function to be held in this regard at the District Panchayat Hall in Kakkanad.

In Kerala, the state government will be the registrar and its IT undertaking enrolment agency will be Akshaya. The Unique Identification (UID) or Aadhaar registration will give each Indian citizen an unique identification number. This will make life easier for citizens as they will not have to submit so many identification documents to avail a new private or government service/schemes. This identification number will be stored in a centralized database and linked to the basic demographic and biometric details of the holder.
The applicant will have to present address proof, identity proof (passport, PAN card, driving licence, ration card, voter-ID card). The verifier will check the documents. This will be followed by iris (eye ball) scanning and fingerprints of all 10 fingers. The card is being issued free of cost as per the Union government notifications.
The UID would obviate the need for a person to produce multiple documentary proofs of his identity for availing any government service, or private services like opening of a bank account. It will come in handy for opening bank accounts, booking tickets on the Internet and other purposes
